Continuing our celebration of Black History Month, today we are featuring Amia Brown, a Senior at Natchitoches Central High School, in part thee of six. My name is Amia Brown and I am an African American girl. I am a senior at Natchitoches Central High School and plan to attend Northwestern State University to study nursing. The journey to finding beauty in my history has not been easy. Since I was a little girl I have always been very sensitive and emotional. So every year when Black history month came around and our classrooms would watch educational videos about our history, it would bring me to tears. In the beginning of time we as black people were kings and queens and were treated as such. Throughout time we have lost such a great mindset of being kings and queens. 2022 taught me a lot about loving myself and embracing my minority. I felt excluded and different in multiple organizations and had to learn that my difference was beautiful. So to all the young girls and boys who feel different, remember you are beautiful and so is your history.

Continuing our celebration of Black History Month, today we are featuring Kanika Revels, Executive Secretary at the Central Office, in part two of six. "I take pride in the strides and accomplishments of my ancestors every day. To be able to witness the history being made especially by African American women, I can’t help but to be inspired by them. Women like Maya Angelou with her powerful and thought-provoking words that help me go deeper with my thoughts and expressions. Or women like Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris who defied the odds and broke barriers with their recent political positions that many thought could and should never take place. These women, with style and grace, have shown the world that the African American community can endure and succeed. All of my life I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded by my “own” Maya’s, Michelle’s and Kamala’s. My mother and aunts showed me how to hold my head up high and keep my eye on the next prize, no matter how many times I stumbled or got knocked down. They taught me to always be graceful and keep God first. I know that there are generations watching me and I am determined to give them what the women in my life instilled in me. "

In celebration of Black History Month, we will be spotlighting six members of our organization to get their own thoughts on the importance of Black History Month and what it means to them. Today in part one of six, we feature Jermaine Thomas from Natchitoches Junior High. "Black history symbolizes the meaning of the past, present, and future. It serves the purpose of being prideful in who you are, where you came from, and where you're heading in the future. Being a figure that is involved in black history allows me to acknowledge and represent work that was paid for many years ago by ancestors and forefathers from centuries ago. It gives me great pleasure in being a black man that represents the field of Education. We have to continue encouraging, motivating, and educating individuals of not just the black race, but of ALL races. Black history, in my opinion, represents equality and justice. The lives, faith, and beliefs that were placed on the line to make the story of what we now call "Black History" shall forever be appreciated and never forgotten! I'm grateful for Black History and this is the true epitome of what it symbolizes to me."
